Some search changes.

May 4th, 2008

You may start to notice some changes to ModernAustin when it comes to the for sale postings, namely the listings will no longer go MLSFinder.  I used MLSFinder (and an Avenue One log-in) because it was the best tool at time and AveOne didn’t kick me off.  However, I don’t have any connection to AveOne so I don’t have strong motivation to give them free advertising.

However, I do know Ryan Brown (blog) and he recently released a pretty nifty search tool that focuses on modern listings around town.  Check it out here.  Read more about it here.  Definitely send in your input.

With this new search tool available, I’ll probably cut down on some the MLS listings.  I will still post up homes for sale, including FSBO &  pre-MLS listings, though just not as many generic MLS listings.  I’d rather do more profiles, photo sets, and other more informational stuff.  We’ll see how it goes.  Let me know if you have any request or suggestions.

Well of course I am sad to see the search link to my company (AvenueOne) go away on this blog, but thank you for using it for as long as you did. I agree that Ryan Brown has a great set-up.

I come to your blog at least twice a day and always enjoy seeing your posts and reading the threads. I think it’s great; keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing how this blog evolves.

I liked Ryan’s old listings better than his new tool. Yes, it was a pain to go through 200+ condo listings to find one you were interested in, but it was fun to browse if you had a free moment. I assume the new tool is easier for him to maintain, but I find I don’t go to his site anymore because of it. The AvenueOne tool is better than the ABOR engine, though it can be buggy and fail to refresh properly. It would also dump your parameters and take you back to default settings every once in a while. I’d like it better if the drop-down settings had more granularity: there’s a big difference between a house with 1000 sq ft and 1400 sq ft - it would be great to be able to search for 1300 sq ft instead.

Thanks for the link and for your feedback on the search interface. David - I understand your point and I appreciate your input. I’ll add more options to the drop down menus. If you have other thoughts about a ‘browsing’ interface I’d love to hear them.

Of course the old list interface is still live (and up to date). Check out my post here for details:
