AD Stenger
January 13th, 2007

Check out Amy Lemen’s article in the Statesman on AD Stenger homes.
I am glad to see Amy was able to talk with his daughter and includes some pictures of Drew Marye’s and Chuck Voelter’s Stenger homes. Chuck is responsible for much of my knowledge of the man himself.
For more pictures and some prior Stenger for sale listings see our Stenger section here.
The article mentions the home he built for John Henry Faulk. This is the home:

One of the great background things about AD Stenger is his love of outdoors. He even produced and sold outdoor films.

nice post ben.
i was dismayed that there was no mention of Cindy (except as ‘my wife’) - she is equally responsible for our home and what it has become and shares my love for all things ’stenger’.
btw, he was a tough looking old dude wasn’t he?
drew, if you happen to read this, you’re house is a ‘twin’ of mine except the plans are reversed. i’ve always wanted to chat with you about our houses. we should try to get in touch.

Is there any way I can find out which homes on Treadwell Stenger designed? I live on Treadwell and have a few thoughts, but didn’t know if there was a way to confirm. Ours has some of the characteristics mentioned in the AAS article but don’t think it is one. If you know or can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Since buying our home 2 years ago I have developed a greater interest in mid-century homes and area neighborhoods.
Thanks

alison,
i drove down treadwell and there are indeed some stengers on the street. i think his daughter lives in one of them. since there is no ‘list’ of homes he built it’s hard to say which ones are by him or simply have some features that were imitated by other builders.
if you’d want you can send me your address via private email (cvoelter@earthlink.net) and i’ll be happy to do another drive-by and give you my opinion.
cheers,
chuck

I lived for several years in the modified A-frame Stenger house on Brady Lane in Rollingwood. To my knowledge, this is the only house he duplicated — be built it “again” on Robert E. Lee. They look a little different from the outside mainly because of landscaping and some modifications made to the Robert E. Lee location, but they are essentially the same, cool, odd little gem of an A-frame!

He actually duplicated a fair number. Often with some custom touchs but largly the same. There is 3 designs you see the most, including the version both Drew and Chuck have. If I get some time, I’ll put together some examples of each.
