Sorry about the lack of updates. Been quite busy on work travel.
Been meaning to put up a short AD Stenger profile. Thanks to Chuck, we had an opportunity to visit with his widow and got nice tidbits of info about the man. We are still researching the extent of his developments as well as him personally. More later.
Took some more pictures up in Barton Hills. Turns out that this is the first home Stenger built up there:

Many more Stenger images as well as a few from the East side and some random others. 104 Image set.
Update: The link didn’t work for the full picture set until today. Sorry about that.

Lot in Bolding Creek plus designs for a 2100+ square foot home.
Description via the seller:
The following home is builder budgeted, plan approved, and permitted by the city - ready to go!! Unfortunately things in my life have changed so I will not be able to complete this work of art.
The home is of modern architecture, designed by the same architect as the other modern works on Live Oak. The two story home is 2,140 square feet, with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and a big study/office that could become a fourth bedroom. TONS OF STORAGE, and a killer master suite. Lots of light. The planned finish out was very high-end. The outside of the home is to be clad in Massaranduba, which is a gorgeous exotic redwood similar to Ipe, but better working qualities.
To build the house as planned would be around $250,000 depending on if you made any changes. The builder is ready to start building ASAP for a completion no later than June 2006. The lot and the plans are $195,000 for a total of around $450,000 for a house that will appraise over $500,000 and have your influences and desires. So you will have a house with instant equity versus buying something at full market price. A two car garage/studio is designed and included in the lot/plan (also city approved) for a price of $195,000 but would add to the build budget.

Right now Modern Austin is mostly a listing collection of modern homes in Austin and Central Texas. While I would love to extend this to other content, I don’t have the available time at this point. My future vision is for more of focus on photo essays and documentation of modern design while continuing the ‘for sale’ listings.
Currently there are over 8,000 unique visitors each month to Modern Austin. That from the 50 or so the first month nearly 2 years ago and without any advertising or attention to exposure. It is a reflection of the interest in modern design in Austin and the commitment of many that modern design is an active part of the community conversation.
Modern Austin (or myself) does not have a financial interest in any for sale listing or business profiled. If at any point in the future this changes, it will be noted.

Studio Momentum is an innovative architecture firm focused on incorporating sustainable design, cutting edge technologies and collaborative processes to achieve our goal: Great Architecture!
Through the use of the latest technology for architectural modeling, we can bring the client into the “virtual space” of their project. Building Information Modeling or “BIM” is the future of architectural design. The creation of a digital model can reveal and resolve problems prior to construction. Highly accurate photo real renderings allow the client to visualize the final product in exacting detail. This allows them to give appropriate feedback and become a larger part of the design process.
Architecture is not born in a vacuum. Studio Momentum believes in a collaborative process requiring communication between the client, builder, designer and community to produce meaningful work. We approach each project with open minds, technical skill and experience, and believe that together a true work of art can be realized.
Great Architecture is the goal. Collaboration, sustainability and modern technology are the way.

This image set takes us from mid-century East Austin homes through new builds and remodels in South Austin.

Just about the quintessential AD Stenger home. Located in Barton Hills, this design recalls more of the Rollingwood variations rather than Barton Hills core grouping.

This mid-century modern apartment (4 plex it appears) is in East Austin. Pops up out of nowhere (at least from the street I was on). Could certainly use a bit TLC.

This house is up near Jordan Park in Northeast Austin and sits on a nice piece of property. Nothing else in the area is quite like it (at least that I saw on this trip out there). Don’t know anything about it so if anyone has any info, please add a comment or drop me a note.

I just realized that I never published this collection of AD Stenger home pictures.
Sorry about that, didn’t mean to be holding out on you.
AD Stenger was perhaps the orginal mid-century modern developer in Austin. He started work on the Barton Hills homes in the early 50s. A UT student, he never earned his degree and unlike other local contemporaries did mostly spec homes. Stenger homes are largely grouped in the Barton Hills and Rollingwood areas. Some of the floor plans are used throughout the developments, but others are unique without known copies.
A quirky guy, he is survived by his widow who still lives in Rollingwood (in the last house he built).

I put these pictures up over on the Austin livemodern forum when they were first taken.
