About For Sale Listings

For now, listings are self-gathered via flipping through the MLS, so it can’t be viewed as exhaustive. We are more than happy to take submissions. If you are listing your home, are a realtor, or just know of a modern for sale, drop us a note with the relevant info (MLS alone is generally enough unless you want additional info included), and we’ll be sure to add it. We reserve the right to determine what is ‘modern design’ and whether to list it. Not all “contemporary style” equals modern. We’ll try to be as liberial as possible in our definition.

We also may throw out the occasional possible remodel opportunities; houses that strike us as having some potential.

Given that all we have to go by often are small picitures, mistakes are bound to be made. Please feel free to bring these to our attention.

Our focus is largely on stand alone structures (single family/duplex) and we will not be listing condo projects unless something really special catches our eye.

We will only be passing along info and do not represent to know anything further about said listings unless otherwise noted. We will do our best to clean up the history and only have available, active listings.

About Modern Austin

The only real concept here is to raise awareness of the history of modern home design in Austin and to encourage continued development.

This will encompass:

  • Features on exisiting homes including mid-century examples and contemporary. Ultimately we hope to create a map of all existing modern homes/areas and document as much possible as the history behind their creation.
  • Interviews/features/listings for architects, designers, builders, developers, … basically anyone who is working to further good design locally.
  • For Sales listings. One of the frustrating thing for those looking for modern design homes is wading through hundreds of listings that you have absolutely no interest in.
  • Renovations. Both restoring modern examples and transforming traditional homes into modern dwellings.
  • More as appropriate.

Modern Austin (or myself) does not have a financial interest in any for sale listing or business profiled. If at any point in the future this changes, it will be noted.

Architect Profile: designStudio

About designSTUDIO

We are a full service design office specializing in modern and prefab design with an emphasis on affordable sustainable design, materials and systems. We have a deep and abiding understanding of what makes something modern, realizing that modern isn’t a style but rather a way of inhabiting the world.

For us, materiality and process are as important as form. Our design strategy approaches form from a functionalist perspective, allowing form to arise out of the process of construction and the materials used. This strategy carries through the design of homes, entertainment venues, and other structures, to the furniture and built-ins designed for specific spaces. We also create graphic identities and environmental designs for the spaces and their surroundings.

(about picture)
courtHOUSE is a Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) house incorporating a classic modernist courtyard design. The impetus for this particular design was the 1963 vintage courtyard apartment the designer lives in. This coupled with an expressed interest from the market for a modestly sized living space led to the courtHOUSE design.
